Brief Biography of Dr. James G. Hood, D.D.S., M.A.

James Gerard Hood was born on November 27, 1951, in Estherville, Iowa.  He was the fifth of eleven children (six girls and five boys) in a large Roman Catholic family.  For his grade school years, he attended elementary school at St. Patrick’s Catholic grade school in Estherville, through the eighth grade.

From Estherville Jim went to St. Johns Preparatory School in Collegeville, Minnesota for high school.  He graduated in May of 1970.  His junior year in high school was spent as an exchange student in Melk, Austria.  As one of twenty-six exchange students Hood traveled extensively, visiting thirteen different countries in Europe.  During his time in Austria Hood became fluent in German.  In his senior year he was active in football and track and set several track records, including the half-mile run, and was all-conference offense and defense in football.

Throughout high school and college years, Hood worked summers as a greens keeper at Estherville Golf and Country Club, did road construction, and worked as part of a tear up gang for Rock Island Railroad.

Hood was accepted into St. John’s University, Collegeville, Minnesota, site of the largest monastery in the world (Benedictine).  His Undergraduate major was a B.A. in Natural Science from St. John’s University, obtained in May of 1974, and a minor in Secondary Education.

After graduation from St. John’s University, Hood worked as a science teacher in the United States Virgin Islands and taught high school science, Biology, Chemistry, and Marine Biology (all with labs) from grades sophomore to senior.  Also Hood served as assistant football coach, head track coach for boys and girls, assistant soccer coach, and an assistant basketball coach.  Mr. Hood was also a Sunday school teacher in the local Catholic Church.

On the island of St. Croix, Hood taught during his 2nd year on the island at Country Day School and taught sophomore biology, lower-level science classes: life science and earth science, first aid, chemistry, and marine biology.

After 2 years of teaching science in the U.S. Virgin Islands Hood returned to studying out of books rather than teaching out of them and attended University of Iowa Dental School from 1976-1980 and graduated with a DDS degree in May of 1980.  After graduating from dental school, Hood was certified to practice dentistry in fifteen states in the Mid-West.  Hood also took the Washington State Board Dental Exam and the Idaho State Board Dental Exam and passed all three.

Dr. James G. Hood, D.D.S. began his private practice of dentistry in Spokane, Washington in 1980.  For thirty years, he has enjoyed providing quality dentistry to the people of Spokane Valley in the beautiful Inland Northwest.

Presently working towards his Ph.D. in Leadership Studies, Gonzaga University, Dr. Hood is on a short hiatus.
